Pentane (C5H12) is relatively inexpensive and one of the most volatile liquid alkanes at room temperature. It is therefore often used in the laboratory as a solvent that can be evaporated easily and quickly. It is also a blowing agent used in the production of polystyrene foam and other foams. In some refrigeration circuits (e.g. -80°C freezers), pentane may be added as an additive to the refrigerant .
Pentane essences (C5H12) are colorless liquids , of low viscosity and characteristic odors. They cause signs whose intensity depends on the concentration inhaled. The subject initially feels euphoric (as with alcohol) then, for stronger exposures, headaches, tinnitus and nausea. For very high concentrations, signs of incoordination, confusion and even convulsive coma will be observed.
If pentane is detectable by smell, only a C5H12 gas detector will be able to accurately measure concentrations in the air. Since it is an explosive gas, we will move towards detecting pentane in explosiveness (% of the lower explosive limit).

Pentane essence can be irritating to the eyes, so we will opt for a full mask for short interventions or for a more comfortable assisted ventilation device with AX type anti-gas filters up to 30 times the VLEP.
