2013 will be a turning point in the field of analysis: KROHNE presents SMARTSENS, the first range of analytical sensors with integrated converter technology with 2-wire loop power supply. SMARTSENS sensors significantly reduce the risk of failure along the chain from the sensor to the process control system and revolutionize the handling of analytical sensors. The first step includes pH, redox and conductivity sensors, followed by other parameters.
Until now, analytical probes required an external converter (proprietary protocol), which translated the probe signals for the control system. Considering the error potential according to the requirements of IEC 61508/IEC 61511 in the chain from the probe to the system, the converter represents the main source of errors (in percentage). Incorrect installation, wiring or configuration of the converter are often the source of problems. To eliminate these risks, KROHNE has miniaturized the converter and mounted it in the probe head: each SMARTSENS probe can thus be connected directly to the control system and enables direct communication via 4…20 mA/HART. KROHNE is thus the first supplier to offer a direct connection of the probe to the control system via a standardized fieldbus.
Due to influences from the product to be measured, temperature, humidity, ambient conditions or pollution, analytical probes lose accuracy over time and must be calibrated, cleaned, regenerated and finally replaced. Today, most analytical probes in the field use analogue technology and must be calibrated on site with the converter, even if they are installed at remote or difficult-to-access measuring points in the open air. These conditions are far from ideal for calibration, which can cause incorrect values in the control system. SMARTSENS offers a safe alternative: all SMARTSENS probes are digital and can be (re)calibrated offline in the laboratory under controlled conditions. The probes store the calibration data and only need to be reconnected on site. For offline calibration, the probe can be connected directly to a PC with the same PACTware (FDT/DTM) installed as used in the asset management system, using a USB interface cable for power supply and bi-directional HART 7 communication.
SMARTSENS target sectors include chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage applications as well as energy, water and wastewater. Each SMARTSENS sensor is designed specifically for its field of application: approvals and certificates range from installation in hazardous areas (Zone 0) to hygienic areas. Along with the sensor range, KROHNE also presents an extensive range of accessories, which includes loop-powered displays, USB interface cables and mounting kits.
